Free TEAS reading practice with original passages
TEAS reading practice built on short original passages: the three sub-content areas ATI publishes — key ideas and details (10%, 15 scored items), craft and structure (6%, 9) and integration of knowledge and ideas (10%, 15) — with a reason for every wrong choice.
TEAS reading practice here is built on short original passages, and every question points back into the text rather than at what the passage reminded you of. The reading section is 26% of the exam — 39 scored items across 45 items in 55 minutes — and ATI splits it into three sub-content areas, so there are three free sets.
What the reading section is made of
| Sub-content area | Weight | Scored items | What it asks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Key ideas and details | 10% | 15 | main idea, supporting details, summarizing, locating a stated fact, inference, sequence |
| Craft and structure | 6% | 9 | the author's purpose, point of view, tone, text structure, word meaning in context |
| Integration of knowledge and ideas | 10% | 15 | comparing two texts, evaluating an argument, using a table or figure with a passage |
The sub-content area names, their weights and their item counts are ATI's published outline; the wording in the "What it asks" column is ours, describing what our practice items cover.
The passages are ours, on purpose
ATI does not publish its scored passages. The few sample items in its content outline are official; none of that text is used here. Every passage on this site is written for the topic it belongs to.
That has a practical consequence for practice. You cannot memorize these passages, which means a set here trains the thing the section actually measures: answering from the text in front of you. A set you have seen before still makes you re-read, and re-reading is the skill.
The pace, and the trap
Fifty-five minutes for 45 items works out to about 1.2 minutes an item. On a reading section that tight, the trap is not speed — it is answering from memory. The most common wrong answer in our reading sets is a true statement that the passage does not make, and the only defense is pointing at the line that proves the choice you picked.
Two habits that pay: read the question before the passage when the passage is short, and keep one finger on the sentence that justifies your answer. If you cannot name the sentence, you have an opinion rather than an answer.
The free reading sets
- Key ideas and details practice — tied with integration of knowledge and ideas as the largest of the three sub-areas, at 15 scored items each
- Craft and structure practice — purpose, tone, structure, and meaning in context
- Integration of knowledge and ideas practice — two-text comparisons, arguments, and passages paired with a table
The method behind each one is in the guides: key ideas and details, craft and structure, and integration of knowledge and ideas.
What these sets are not
They are not a score estimate — ATI equates the reading score across versions of the exam, so a percentage from a practice set is not a TEAS score. They are also not official passages: ATI does not publish its scored passages. The few sample items in its content outline are official; none of that text is used here.
The full paper, section by section, is at how many questions are on the TEAS, and the other three sections start at TEAS practice test.
