PTCB vs ExCPT: Which Pharmacy Technician Certification?
Both award a CPhT, from two different boards. PTCE vs ExCPT side by side — questions, time, where you test, eligibility, renewal, accreditation and fee — and how to choose.
PTCB and ExCPT both lead to a credential called CPhT — Certified Pharmacy Technician — which is the whole reason the choice feels confusing. Two different organizations issue two different exams, and both certificates carry the same four letters. The difference is who issues it: PTCB issues the CPhT through the PTCE, and the NHA (National Healthcareer Association) issues a CPhT through the ExCPT. Neither exam is the other, and "CPhT" alone does not tell you which one someone holds.
First, the naming tangle
- PTCB — the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, the certifying organization.
- PTCE — the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, PTCB's exam.
- ExCPT — NHA's exam.
- CPhT — the credential both exams award.
So "PTCE vs. PTCB" is not a rivalry — the PTCE is PTCB's exam. The real comparison is PTCE vs. ExCPT: PTCB's exam against NHA's. When a job posting says "CPhT required," it usually means either credential will do; when it names a board, it means that one.
Side by side
| PTCB (PTCE) | NHA (ExCPT) | |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer | Pharmacy Technician Certification Board | National Healthcareer Association |
| Credential awarded | CPhT | Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) |
| Questions | 90 multiple-choice (80 scored, 10 unscored) | 100 questions |
| Time | 110 minutes (1 hour and 50 minutes) | 2 hours and 10 minutes |
| Where you test | Test centers only — not offered online | PSI test center or live remote proctoring |
| Eligibility | A recognized training program, or 500 hours of work experience, or a pharmacy degree | High school diploma or GED, plus 1 year / 1,200 supervised hours, or a program completed within 5 years |
| Renewal | Every 2 years; 20 CE hours (incl. 1 h pharmacy law + 1 h patient safety) | Every two years, with at least 20 hours of CE |
| Accreditation | NCCA-accredited (since 2006) | NCCA-accredited |
| Fee | $129 | See NHA |
Two notes on that table. The PTCB "Questions", "Time" and "Fee" cells come from PTCB's own materials, and the NHA side comes from two NHA pages of different vintages: only the 2-hour-10-minute "Time" figure is from an NHA blog dated 2018 — treat it as per NHA (2018) and confirm the current figure with NHA — while the renewal and CE detail is from NHA's current CPhT certification page. Both boards are NCCA-accredited — PTCB became the first pharmacy certification body to earn it, in 2006 — so the accreditation row is no longer left blank. The eligibility row is abbreviated here and explained in full below, because NHA's page presents it as one requirement plus two routes.
Questions
PTCB's exam is 90 items, of which 80 are scored: "The PTCE is a computer-based exam with 90 multiple-choice questions (80 scored questions and 10 unscored questions)." NHA describes its exam as "the 100-question ExCPT exam." A 2018 NHA blog post adds that "The ExCPT exam consists of 100 questions and 20 pretest questions" — so if that vintage still holds, the ExCPT shows 120 items, 100 of them scored. Either way the two exams are close in size; neither is meaningfully shorter than the other.
Where you can take it
This is the most concrete difference between them. The PTCE cannot be taken online. PTCB states that "Online testing is available for all credential exams except the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam® (PTCE®)." You sit it in person at a Pearson test center — PTCB runs more than 1,400 of them, including more than 100 on military bases.
The ExCPT offers more than one route: NHA says candidates can test "at a PSI testing center near you, or through live remote proctoring at the location of your choice." If remote proctoring from home is decisive for you — a long drive to the nearest center, a scheduling constraint, a mobility issue — that is a real, checkable difference in NHA's favor, and one PTCB does not currently match for the PTCE.
Eligibility
PTCB accepts either path: "A PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (or completion within 60 days of application submission)" or "Equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician (min. 500 hours)" — and "A Pharmacy degree is acceptable in lieu of a recognized pharmacy technician training/education program."
NHA's requirement is shaped differently. Every candidate must have a high school diploma or GED — or be scheduled to earn one within 12 months — and then meet one of two routes: completion of a pharmacy technician training or education program "within the last 5 years", or "1 year of work experience with at least 1,200 hours of supervised pharmacy-related work within the last 3 years." Read the two side by side before you choose — the work-experience route is 500 hours for PTCB and 1,200 for NHA, and the recency windows are worded differently.
Renewal
Both credentials must be renewed, on the same two-year cycle but with different requirements. PTCB: "PTCB CPhTs are required to renew their certification every 2 years to maintain their credential." — with 20 hours of CE (including 1 hour in pharmacy law and 1 hour in patient safety). NHA: "Certifications must be renewed every two years" with "at least 20 hours of continuing education (CE)." Whichever you hold, the renewal clock starts the moment you are certified.
Which should you take?
This is advice, not a fact about either exam. There is no universal winner, because the deciding factors are local to you:
- Check your state board of pharmacy first. Certification is national, but licensure and registration are set by the states, and a state requirement can settle the question before you compare the exams. Look up your own state's rule — we do not list states here, because the rules change.
- Check the employers you are targeting. Some name a specific credential in postings or onboarding. If the pharmacies near you list one, take that one.
- Then weigh the exams themselves. If remote-availability or a different eligibility route matters to you, NHA's options may fit better; if you are already on a PTCB-recognized training program, PTCB's route may fit better. Both are legitimate CPhT credentials.
Whichever you pick, the preparation has the same shape — 90-odd questions under a fixed clock against a published blueprint. Start with how many questions and how much time, the score you need, and what makes the exam hard; if you are still deciding whether to certify at all, the full certification path covers cost and eligibility.
